Day 7 - Kobe, Around Town

Baumkuchen
Wednesday - Amy and I picked up Haruko to go to the Hakujuji Bakery shop, because after all, it's all about the food here in Japan.  They said I needed to experience the special bakery which prepared western style treats in Kobe.  It is famous for its Baumkuchen, it means tree cake in German.  The cake is like a sponge cake that it made in many layered rounds like a tree trunk.  It tastes like a lightly flavored rum pound cake.  Amy had a strawberry topping cheesecake, Haruko had a small chestnut flavored pastry in a round, and I had "chocolate vacation" layered cake.

After coffee, we dropped Haruko at her house so that we could continue on to the 1000 shop, UniGlo (like Old Navy), a few other shops like a recycle shop where you can find interesting used items, even kimonos.  Amy bought a china dish and a cute porcelain tea set with a small teapot and two cups and saucers with a rose petal pattern.  We ended the day watching an old Alfred Hitchcock black and white movie and visiting her neighbor Jennie for dessert.  We sat in front of the fire and told funny and scary stories for awhile before we bid farewell to Janet who was returning to England the next day.  The air was cool and crisp when we walked back to her house.  It feels like autumn here and the moon is a bright yellow saucer.
